What are zero waste products?
Put simply, zero waste products are things that are made or packaged in a way that produces as little waste as possible.
For example, think of a regular toothbrush. After you use it for a few months, you throw it away and it ends up in the trash. But a zero waste toothbrush might be made out of bamboo or another sustainable material, and when you're done with it, you can compost it instead of throwing it away.
The idea is to use products that are designed to reduce the amount of waste that we create, so we can help take care of the planet and keep it clean and healthy for ourselves and all the other living things on it.
Why should we care about zero waste brands and products?
We should care if a product is zero waste because it's better for the environment — which impacts everyone. From the air we breathe to the soil we grow our foods in, caring for our planet cares for us in the future. When we throw things away, they usually end up in a landfill. Over time, this landfills have grown immensely, getting bigger and bigger, and it takes up a lot of valuable space that could be otherwise green space.
Not only that, but some things in the landfill can be harmful to the environment and for our future. For example, plastic takes a very long time to break down, and when it does, it can release harmful chemicals into the soil and water.
In fact, some types of plastic can take hundreds or even thousands of years to decompose. This means that once plastic is thrown away, it can stay in the environment for a very long time, taking up space and potentially causing harm to wildlife and ecosystems.
Some types of plastic, like plastic bags or straws, might only be used for a few minutes before they are thrown away, but they can stay in the environment for hundreds of years. That's why it's important to reduce our use of single-use plastics and choose more sustainable materials whenever possible. Making small, simple swaps daily by choosing to bring your own water bottle, straws or coffee cups can have a big impact over time and reduce your reliance on plastic products.
When we use zero waste products, we create less waste, which means we reduce the amount of space needed for landfills and the potential harm to the environment. Plus, some zero waste products are made from sustainable materials, which means they are better for the planet overall.
So, caring about zero waste products is a way for us to help protect the planet and make sure it stays healthy for us and all the other living things on it.
